Gathering for Starling Murmuration

From Walter Bulmer LRPS

After a kind invite from Catherine Yates to gather a few people to watch a starling murmeration myself, Brian Blake, Tony & Liz Mearman and a friend of Catherines called Alison.

We met at The Blacksmiths Arms (the pub is on the road from High Etherley to West Auckland at Spring Gardens) where we gathered our cameras and walked approximately 1 mile for this great spectacle. A first for me as I’ve never witnessed this before and we weren’t let down.

As the light faded the starlings began to gather in there hundreds all eventually becoming one huge mass probably from 3 to 4000 birds. In the middle of all this we had the excitement of a couple of Sparrow Hawks trying hard to slip one or two from the group for an evening feed but, safety in numbers, they all survived.

It was a great spectacle to see so a big thanks to Catherine for spotting this chance and inviting others.
