Members’ AV Show:

Our Members’ AV Show night has become an annual highlight of our year and it just gets better! As Dave Murrell said, it’s always good to have an in depth look at the amazing work of our members. In this case, 13 members, including veteran Jack Gilmore, showed 18 AVs that were exceptional – very varied, entertaining and enjoyable. The photography, the music, the presentations – all superb, ranging from spellbinding to electrifying

AVs were by Martin Stobbard (Sorrento), Andrew Bowron (Wonderful World 1 & 2), Walter Bulmer LRPS (Mach Loop), Jack Gilmore (Commercial Break & Show), George Hodgson (Chelsea Flower Show & Balloons), Stephen Bell CPAGB (Listen to the Music & In the Army Now), Dave Murrell (Timelapse), Ian Peele (Wideangle Walkabout), David Forster (Be my Mannequin & Flower Globe), Michael Watson (British Deer), Angy Ellis (Fight Night), Alyson Shields (Alyson’s Assortment) and Mark Petherbridge LRPS CPAGB (Top of the Pops)

Well done organiser and MC David Forster. And our sound and vision guys John Attle and Ian Peele did a great job with our state of the art sound and projection rigs

Many members will be inspired to produce AVs after this. Some links to AV software are in Useful Links here

Club Night News: 13th July

Ron Henry FRPS: hAVe camera will trAVel

Is Ron Henry the best ambassador for AV we’ve ever seen?! He is a self confessed AV obsessive, with immense expertise and a light, good humoured touch. He is a member of Gosforth CC and Chairman of the Northern AV Group. For many years his company were producing sophisticated AVs for sales conference, product launches and the like, at one time involving a bank of 18 Carousel slide projectors. His AVs last night were a feast for the senses – great pictures, music that made you want to get up and dance, atmospheric sound effects and good humoured, full of interest commentary, taking us to fabulous locations such as Miami, Key West, Cuba, Tombstone and the OK Corral shoot out, and an around the world in 80 days trip by hot air balloon. He’s a man that has great holidays and takes us along for the ride. If AVs are the Marmite of the photography world as Ron said, there will be more converts after this. Who knew it could be so enjoyable?!

Our Sound & Vision crew, John A and Ian, unusually, were thanked by both Ron, and Elizabeth in her VOT!

There is an article by Ron Henry about the Northern Audio Visual Group in the latest issue of Northern Focus magazine (front cover picture, Double Heading at Bowes Railway, by Michael Watson)  here

Contact details for the Northern Audio Visual Group are on the NCPF website here

Results Night: Hon Members’ Cup & Iris Trophy

We had two judges – Simon Green from Consett for the Hon Members’ Cup (5 or 6 prints on a theme) and Alan McCormick ARPS of Hexham & District PS and President of the NCPF for the Iris Trophy (5 or 6 PDI on a theme). Simon is a first timer to Durham, quite new to the circuit, a pro photographer for 20 years including the training of Special Forces in surveillance photography. Alan has been to Durham many times as judge and lecturer and is a stalwart of the judging scene for many years

It was good to have two different judging styles on the night, both excellent, and doing full justice to the exceptionally good photography!

Club Night News: 22nd June

Results: Sterling Award & Daisy Edis Trophy

Judge: Keith Suddaby FRPS FRPS (AV) MPAGB EFIAP FBPE from Morpeth CC

It was a real pleasure to welcome Keith Suddaby back to Durham where he memorably judged before. He was a renowned international judge of distinction now retired from judging so we were lucky indeed to entice him back. He was also instrumental with Paul Ritchie in bringing Denis Thorpe to Durham for the Harry Holder Memorial Lecture some years ago which members may recall as one of our best nights ever

As fresh and dynamic as ever he brought a whole new way of judging that involved the packed audience (mentally) scoring each picture 2, 3, 4 or 5 out of 5 – this could be helpful when assessing your own pictures! He also gave helpful suggestions, simple but effective, on how to improve images with the levels and saturation sliders. He calls the middle of the levels slider the “Feel” button, the use of which could really catch on!

Two hotly contested trophies were won – results to follow soon

Members inspired by the fabulous Natural History photography in the Daisy Edis can find the combined FIAP, PSA and RPS Definitions of Nature Photography (also adopted by the PAGB) in Definitions on the Competitions page here

DPS Annual Exhibition: Treasures of the North

Keith Kirkland: What Pleases Me

Keith Kirkland’s show last night definitely pleased the packed audience too. It was a joy to see so many beautifully made and mounted prints, and across so many genres popular with club photographers. He is a member of Whickham PC, a hotbed of printing talent, and his mostly colour prints positively zinged with impact (using a Canon Pro 100 and Fotospeed gloss). He is a relaxed and interesting commentator which added to the enjoyment. He is a master of shutter speed control, evident for instance in achieving perfectly blurred propellers in flying aircraft and spot-on panning in motor sport shots

After this, sales of black core white mounts will rocket!

Next up from Whickham PC will be Edward Forster and Mick Howe 12th October, also showing prints and this time mainly black and white

DPS Annual Exhibition: Treasures of the North

Coming soon! It will be in the beautiful setting of the North Aisle of Durham Cathedral for the month of August, will feature around 90 prints by DPS members and seen by an international audience. It will be an exhibition on the theme of “Treasures of the North” which is completely open to individual members’ interpretation. Could be people, iconic buildings/art work, objects, landscapes, seascapes, wild life, events. Just needs to have a connection with the North of England. As Vice President Dave Murrell said of subject matter, “Can be as wide as your imagination”

Open to all members! Put your name down on the notice board without delay to take part and bring in your mounted prints sooner rather than later so the team can prepare

Judges:

A Section – David Boath from Richmond CC

B Section – our own Ian Stafford

It was a treat to see so many excellent prints, albeit in unfamiliar surroundings, so thanks everyone who entered. Our judges did an excellent job, combining appreciation for the work of fellow photographers with useful feedback and suggestions. The superbly articulate David Hickman gave a well deserved vote of thanks

There were quite a few missing PDI versions. Let’s hope these were acts of rebellion in support of all conquering prints rather than just forgetting! Of course the prints are the thing but simultaneous projection during commentary adds to the enjoyment for the invariably large audience

David L Smith FRPS MPAGB EFIAP: Themes & Sequences

It was a magical experience from veteran botanist and photographer David Smith last night – a stream of sequences of superlative images – from lichen, moss, liverwort communities to funghi to plant galls (who knew?) to tree flowers to plant portraits to beach combing to “Death on the Beach” to fish vertebrae (and other collectables) to polished agates and more. It was like a boxed set of Planet Earth in still photography. David has immense skill in creating beautiful images in camera and finds photographic opportunities at every turn, not least the car park of his home town, Stokesley. Altogether, an inspiration

After this we’ll be dusting off our slide light boxes, putting macro lenses on our buy list, and checking out reviews of the waterproof Panasonic Lumix DMC FT5 and other compact cameras (with which, as well as his SLRs, David creates stunning, very sharp images)

Peter Talbot: Expeditions in a Zodiac Boat in UK, Sweden, Norway and Greenland

Peter Talbot is a young adventurer/ photographer who also lectures widely about his travels, always in aid of Prostate Cancer UK after his father contracted the disease in 2009. Thankfully his Dad has recovered fully thanks to an early diagnosis and treatment. Peter has continued to support the charity ever since and has raised over £20,000 so far, principally from his lectures

He gave his first talk to Durham PS in 2011 and delivered the Malcolm Thurman Memorial Lecture in 2014 and it was great to have him back, this time focussing particularly on his adventures in Greenland. Few places are as remote and bleakly beautiful, dangerous even, and it was a thrilling and spellbinding experience to hear his stories and see his pictures. He has a full time (unrelated) job and his charity work – how on earth does he pack in the planning, organising and experiencing the amazing expeditions?!

More about prostate cancer and Prostate Cancer UK, and the importance of early testing and diagnosis, is here

Any group or organisation interested in booking Peter for one of his talks can contact him by email: p.d.talbot(at)googlemail.com (substituting (at) for @ of course)

Alan Wennington: Wildlife and a bit of everything else

We’ve had many top flight photographers doing talks at Durham PS and Alan Wennington, delivering his first talk to a big audience, is right up there with the best of them. It turns out Alan accepted the invitation, which was instigated by John Attle, out of a desire to give something back after enjoying lectures by DPS members Angy Ellis and Jed Wee at his home club Blyth PS

Thankfully he did because the packed audience of fellow enthusiasts enjoyed a great night of honest photography across the many genres that we all enjoy and to a very high standard. Particularly strong were his wildlife pictures, including an amazing collection of elusive birds mostly captured within the North East region

Alan is a relaxed, congenial performer, giving great insights with the stories behind the pictures and with a nice line of humour around judges

He is a member of the Pentax User Forum, as are quite a few DPS members, and it was good to have some others in the audience as guests too – and he’s also a member of quite a few other on line photography forums. These are communities of like minded people and you can clearly see why Alan is so popular

We look forward to his next visit to Durham, sooner rather than later

Alan’s Pentax User Forum photo gallery is here
