A most enjoyable visit to the PAGB Masters of Print opening exhibition

by Alex Ellwood

I was delighted to accompany Joe Grabham to the 1st PAGB Masters of Print opening ceremony last Monday in London where he had a print selected for this prestigious exhibition.

Joe’s print ‘Last One Out’ was exhibited alongside many other outstanding prints from very talented authors such as Irene Froy, Warren Alani, Judith Parry and Ross McKelvey, to name but a few. Also selected was a print by Roy Elwood of Whickham PC, ‘Celebration of Dance’; and ‘Sea Power’ by Andrew Nicoll from Whitley Bay PS.

The exhibition was held in the RK Burt Gallery, Union Street, literally, a stones throw from the Shard. Mr Clifford Burt, owner of the gallery, along with sponsors of the PAGB, presented individual prizes and while Joe did not receive an individual prize the fact that he had a print exhibited was reward enough. The afternoon was a very relaxed and happy event hosted by Rod Wheelans of the PAGB, with plenty of time to chat with other like-minded people.

Chris Davis: My Journey as a Fashion and Portrait Photographer

And what an incredible journey it has been so far for Chris Davis aka Specular!

In the last talk of our year, he described a successful career in the exciting international worlds of fashion, model and makeup photography, and all from a local lad from Brandon. Lauded for his artistry and imagination, it was one of the best talks at DPS in the last 30 years, it gave the audience of fellow photographers plenty of ideas and techniques as to poses and lighting. Never have so many local locations such as Tynemouth beach looked so exotic

And we have Veronica Barker, a member since 1983 and a neighbour of Chris, to thank for the booking. Chris will be attending the forthcoming Roger’s Christmas Quiz so another opportunity for a chat

A definition of Specularity: “The state of resembling a mirror”

Club Night News: 30th November

Results night: Digital Trophy & George Samuel Trophy

Judges:

Digital Trophy – Henrietta Byrne LRPS DPAGB

George Samuel – Jane Black ARPS FPSA Hon PAGB

The snowy weather meant we had a less packed house than usual and judge Jane Black was unable to make it from Whitley Bay. However, the intrepid band that made it enjoyed an excellent night of sparkling, mainly new to the club, photography which was greatly enhanced by Henrietta’s insightful, empathetic, elegant commentary. It was interesting that many members chose to submit triptychs or images linked by theme in the Digital trophy though there is no requirement to do so in the rules

Wear Area Battle – a close run thing!

From Tony Mearman

An excellent support from 21 DPS members at the annual “Wear Area Battle”, hosted every year since 1986 by Washington Camera Club. We enjoyed an exciting evening in a packed meeting room viewing the entries from DPS and 8 other clubs in the Wear region.

The judge for the evening was Alan Porrett DPAGB EFIAP APAGB who awarded marks out of 30 to determine the winning club and best individual photograph.

The other competing camera clubs were:

  • Castleside and District

  • Chester le Street

  • Consett and District

  • Esh Winning and District

  • Stanhope

  • Sunderland

  • Washington

  • Wear Valley

It was a very close run competition with 3 clubs tying for first place on 160 points with Washington, Consett and DPS all sharing the honour of winning the 31st annual competition. With a score of 29 points, Joe Grabham had the highest marks in the DPS entries for his enchanting portrait “Towards the Light”. Our image entries and scores were as follows:

  • Abandoned by Tony Mearman 25 points

  • In the Heat of the Moment by Jed Wee 28 points

  • River Etive by Ivor Miller 26 points

  • Special Girl by Tony Mearman 24 points

  • Stefan Bradi Moto GP by Michael Watson 28 points

  • Towards the Light by Joe Grabham 29 points

Thank you to Jed, Ivor, Michael and Joe for submitting their superb images to the competition.

The winning image from Washington CC achieving the top score of 30 points was “Finally Home” a superb photograph of a Lancaster bomber with its flight crew depicted to be returning home following a bombing mission.

Last year Washington CC won the Wear Area Trophy and suggested Consett and DPS each hold the trophy for 6 months and following the toss of a coin, DPS will hold the trophy for the next 6 months before handing it over to Consett.
